"What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand". -Chinese proverb
At the Murie Science and Learning Center we are strong believers of this methodology. Getting your hands dirty, your feet wet, and 'experiencing' the subject matter can provide the most lasting of memories. Join us and Alaska Geographic in the field for a head-first dive into the subject matter. Shoulder-to-shoulder with other teachers, scientists and specialists we will experiment with activities, and discuss methods, tools, and resources. Professional development credit is provided by the University of Alaska.
Most teacher trainings are coordinated by Alaska Geographic and are based from the MSLC field camp in Denali. The field camp is situated along the Teklanika River and makes an excellent launching point for Denali exploration. Additional teacher trainings highlighting park science are hosted in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve with the Wrangell Mountains Center.
Participants on these teacher trainings must be capable walkers, in good health, and equipped for sudden changes in weather. Hiking distance and physical fitness levels are described in greater detail in each course overview document.
